PM Modi’s Landmark 5-Nation Tour Unlocks Trade, Green Energy, and Circular Economy Gains for India

PARTHA ROY, KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a highly productive six-day visit from May 15-20, 2026, to the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The tour delivered concrete outcomes in energy security, technological collaboration, strategic partnerships, and sustainable development, positioning India as a key player in global supply chains and the green transition.

In the UAE, PM Modi’s discussions with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan resulted in a framework for a Strategic Defence Partnership, expanded cooperation on strategic petroleum reserves, long-term LPG supply agreements, and a $5 billion commitment toward Indian infrastructure and financial sectors. These pacts significantly strengthen India’s energy security while boosting bilateral trade under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The European leg built upon the landmark India-EU Free Trade Agreement concluded earlier in 2026. In the Netherlands, bilateral ties were elevated with multiple agreements focusing on semiconductors, critical minerals, water management, and advanced manufacturing. A key highlight was the Tata Electronics-ASML collaboration, set to accelerate India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Sweden saw the elevation of relations to a full Strategic Partnership, along with a Joint Action Plan (2026-2030) targeting green hydrogen, AI, defence, and doubling of trade. Norway emphasised a Green Strategic Partnership covering clean energy and the blue economy, while Italy advanced commitments toward a €23 billion bilateral trade target by 2029, alongside defence and innovation pacts.

Boosting Circular Economy and Sustainable Growth
A defining feature of the tour was the strong emphasis on circular economy development. Partnerships with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway bring cutting-edge expertise in resource efficiency, waste-to-value technologies, advanced recycling, and sustainable materials management. These collaborations will help India transition from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a regenerative circular economy across key sectors such as electronics, batteries, textiles, plastics, and automotive components.

The impact is expected to be transformative. By promoting repair, remanufacturing, refurbishment, and high-quality recycling, India can reduce dependence on imported raw materials, minimise landfill waste, cut carbon emissions, and create closed-loop supply chains. Technology transfers and joint ventures will empower Indian MSMEs to adopt circular business models, fostering innovation and new green industries. This aligns with national goals on resource efficiency and complements the sustainability chapters of the India-EU FTA.

Economic Ripple Effects and Job Creation
The engagements are projected to unlock over $40 billion in potential investments across energy, semiconductors, infrastructure, and green technologies. Strengthened energy ties will stabilise costs and build supply chain resilience, while semiconductor projects and circular economy ventures will accelerate ‘Make in India’ and attract significant FDI.

These developments promise robust job creation. Semiconductor fabs could generate tens of thousands of high-skilled jobs, while circular economy initiatives in recycling, remanufacturing, and green logistics will create lakhs of opportunities, particularly for youth and MSMEs. Broader infrastructure and clean energy projects will support millions more across manufacturing, logistics, and services.

Improving Quality of Life
Long-term benefits include lower energy and material costs, cleaner air and water through renewables and circular practices, and improved urban waste management. Technology transfers will drive innovation in electric mobility, sustainable agriculture, and smart cities, leading to better public health, resilient infrastructure, and higher living standards.

By bridging Gulf energy reliability with European innovation and circular economy expertise, PM Modi’s five-nation tour has laid a strong foundation for enhanced trade, strategic depth, clean energy transition, and sustainable growth — paving the way for job-rich, inclusive, and environmentally responsible development in India.
