India-Japan Ties Enter New Era of Transformative Economic and Security Cooperation

PARTHA ROY, KOLKATA: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held summit talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday 2nd July 2026, marking a significant step in deepening the bilateral strategic partnership and ushering in a new era of transformative cooperation in economic security and emerging technologies. Takaichi, who arrived in New Delhi late Wednesday, emphasised that the need for closer collaboration between the two countries is growing as they share fundamental values and strategic interests.

During the summit, she expressed Japan’s commitment to strengthening its “strategically aligned trusted partnership” with India through concrete initiatives in economic security and other key areas. The leaders are expected to issue a joint statement outlining the future direction of bilateral cooperation. Additionally, outcome documents focusing on economic security and artificial intelligence (AI) are being finalised. A major highlight of the visit is the economic forum involving more than 150 representatives from Japan’s business community. Roughly 120 cooperation agreements between companies from both nations are set to be exchanged. Announcements of investments exceeding 2 trillion yen (over $12 billion) to launch new businesses in India are also anticipated.

Prime Minister Modi, speaking at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, underscored that “in today’s complex global landscape, trust is the most vital strategic asset.” He highlighted the synergy between the two countries, noting that India and Japan are deepening their partnership by combining Japan’s precision technology with India’s software capabilities to accelerate AI innovation. The two sides are advancing a Joint Economic Security Roadmap aimed at reinforcing supply chain resilience in critical sectors such as semiconductors, quantum technology, and advanced materials.

The partnership will also include defence co-development and expanded collaboration in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and biotechnology to deliver benefits on a global scale. These developments reflect the growing convergence between Tokyo and New Delhi on economic security challenges and technological advancement. By promoting investment, innovation, and joint projects, the summit is expected to elevate the bilateral relationship to a higher level of practical and strategic cooperation.
