PARTHA ROY, KOLKATA: In response to the alarming rise in sudden medical emergencies driven by sedentary habits, poor diets, and chronic stress, the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce organised an insightful session in Kolkata on August 29, 2026. Experts warned that lifestyle shifts have multifold increased the risks of heart attacks, cardiac arrests, and strokes, striking individuals across generations—from youths to senior citizens.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nishant Agarwal, Chief of Emergency at Charnock Hospital, highlighted the vital “golden hour”—the first 60 minutes after a cardiovascular or stroke event when immediate treatment restores blood flow and prevents permanent organ damage. Dr. Agarwal urged citizens of all ages to learn Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR. He detailed non-CPR protocols, including scene safety, airway maintenance, and the recovery position, alongside the FAST stroke identification framework: checking for Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and recognizing that Time is critical. Widespread public training empowers everyday bystanders to act swiftly as first responders, saving lives anywhere.
