PARTHA ROY, KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia for the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit has yielded significant outcomes, marking a major step forward in strengthening and deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. Hosted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, the summit celebrated six years of the partnership while outlining an ambitious roadmap for future collaboration across defence, trade, energy, education, and people-to-people ties.

The leaders reviewed progress across the bilateral spectrum and identifying new avenues for cooperation in priority sectors including trade and investment, defence and security, critical minerals, cyber and emerging technologies, space, civil nuclear cooperation, clean energy, education, and cultural exchanges. A key highlight was the reaffirmation of commitment to finalise an ambitious, balanced, and mutually beneficial Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) at the earliest. Both sides welcomed the outcomes of the Australia-India CEOs Forum and the Economic Business Roadmap, encouraging businesses to explore fresh investment opportunities.

Education cooperation also received a boost, with appreciation for the growing presence of Australian universities in India and their role in building a future-ready workforce and fostering innovation. The leaders acknowledged the vibrant Indian diaspora in Australia as a living bridge between the two societies. In a significant cultural gesture, Australia agreed to the voluntary repatriation of three ancient artefacts of Tamil Nadu origin — a 11th-12th century granite Nandi sculpture, an 11th-century bronze Trident with Bhadrakali, and a 12th-century basalt statue of six-headed Karttikeya. These will soon be returned to India.

Defence and security cooperation saw substantial advancement. The two sides renewed the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, identifying key areas such as force interoperability, maritime domain awareness, defence industrial collaboration, cyber security, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian assistance. A new Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap was adopted to enhance information sharing and operational coordination. Additionally, a Joint Statement on Energy Security was issued, and the Administrative Arrangement for the 2014 Civil Nuclear Agreement was finalised, paving the way for Australian uranium supplies to India. Several landmark agreements and MoUs were signed during the visit. These include the India-Australia Partnership for Cyber, Critical Technologies and Supply Chains (PACTS), a Sports Collaboration Roadmap focused on high-performance centres and Para sports, an MoU between the Indian Coast Guard and Australia’s Maritime Border Command, and initiatives in skill development, particularly a Centre of Excellence in Mining at Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Western Australia’s TAFE.

In education, Letters of Intent were exchanged for setting up campuses of Flinders University in Bengaluru and Victoria University in Gurugram. Agreements were also reached on rooftop solar training, traditional knowledge digital library access, scientific cooperation between geological surveys, and film-making collaboration between Satyajit Ray Film Institute in Kolkata and Griffith Film School. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific and committed to working together on regional and global challenges. The summit has not only consolidated existing gains but has injected fresh momentum into the multifaceted partnership, positioning India and Australia as increasingly vital strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific region. Officials from both sides described the visit as highly productive, with concrete deliverables expected to yield long-term benefits in security, economic growth, and cultural understanding.
