Dr. Saroj Ghose pioneer science communicator & promoter of Science Museum movement in India passed away

PARTHA ROY, Kolkata: National Council of Science Museum ( NCSM ) announced Dr . Saroj Ghose ( 1935 – 2025 ) pioneer science communicator and founder Director General of the NCSM breathed his last on 17th May 2025 at 11.35 am Pacific Time in Seattle ,USA at the age of 89. As per his wish , his body was donated to Washington University for scientific research as conveyed by his family.

Dr. Saroj Ghose served as Director General of NCSM from 1979 to 1997. He was the architect of India ‘s network of Science Centres and Science Museums. Dr. Ghose also served as President of International Council of Museums ( ICOM ) in Paris.

Dr. Ghose was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2007 and Padma Shri in 1989. Dr. Saroj Ghose played a crucial role in designing landmark institutions such as the Science City in Kolkata, the National Science Centre in New Delhi, and the Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai. After retirement from NCSM , Dr. Saroj Ghose contributed in development of Town Hall Museum in Kolkata , Parliament House Museum and Rastrapati Bhavan Museum in New Delhi.
