NEWS WAVE INDIA: At the 95th Academy Awards, Tamil documentary “The Elephant Whisperers” made history as the first Indian production to win in the Documentary Short Subject category. Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves in her debut, the Netflix documentary emerged victorious over fellow nominees “Haulout,” “How Do You Measure a Year?,” “The Martha Mitchell Effect,” and “Stranger at the Gate.”

In her acceptance speech, Gonsalves championed the sacred bond between humans and the natural world, the respect for indigenous communities, and empathy towards other living beings that share the same space as us. She also spoke for coexistence.

The film showcases a unique and incredible bond between the indigenous people of Tamil Nadu and their gentle giants, the elephants. Through the eyes of the elephant whisperers, the documentary captures the essence of the unique relationship between the two.

The filmmakers spent months in the forests of Tamil Nadu to capture the interactions between the locals and the elephants. The documentary’s breathtaking cinematography and storytelling have garnered immense acclaim since its release on Netflix.

The win at the Oscars is a historic moment for Indian cinema, and the team behind “The Elephant Whisperers” has been showered with accolades from politicians, celebrities, and audiences alike. The documentary’s message of coexistence and compassion has resonated with audiences worldwide and has shed light on the need to preserve and protect our natural world.
