tide gauge system
NEWS WAVE INDIA: The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata has commissioned an Automated Tide Gauge (ATG) system in river Hooghly and its 13 strategic locations to facilitate the pilotage of appropriate navigational aids, apart from having lighthouses, light vessels, river marks and buoys, vessel traffic management system and the like. They are Sagar, Upper Eden, Gangra Semaphore, Haldia, Nischintapur, Diamond Harbour (or Raychak), Hooghly Point, Phalta, Mayapur, Budge Budge, Akra, Garden Reach, and Tribeni. It took Rs 12, 87,51,688, including GST to complete the project. The project was completed on March 2, this year.
The commissioning of this project will fulfill the long-standing requirement of SMP Kolkata for continuous and precise water-level monitoring through the assessment and integration of tide gauges with a web-based telemetry solution.
It should be mentioned in this regard, that SMP, Kolkata maintains lighthouses at Middleton Point on the Sagar island one and a half kilometer inshore and Dariapur lighthouse on the right bank of Hooghly South of Rasulpur river and about 2.7 kms inshore.
Besides, SMP Kolkata is the first major port to adopt ROIP System (Radio over Internet Protocol) as an effective long-range marine communication, covering the Hooghly river estuary (with four base stations at Kolkata, Hooghly Point, Haldia & Sagar Pilot Station) from Kolkata to Sand heads. Through the system, vessels can directly communicate via radio, especially during inclement weather. The project was inaugurated on October 25, 2021.
