Dilip Guha, New Delhi: In a significant stride towards fostering an inclusive environment, a survey report unveiled at the India Rural Colloquy 2023 has highlighted the remarkable aspirations of parents in rural India towards educating their children, regardless of gender. The report, titled “State of Elementary Education in Rural India – 2023,” was launched by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, the Minister of Education and Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India, at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi on August 8. The event organised by Transform Rural India Foundation (TRI).

The survey, conducted by the Development Intelligence Unit (DIU), in collaboration with Transform Rural India Foundation (TRI) and Sambodhi Research Pvt. Ltd, encompassed responses from 6,229 parents across 20 states in India. Notably, a staggering 78% of parents expressed their determination to educate their daughters to graduation and beyond, challenging traditional barriers. This statistic resonates with the sentiment of 82% of parents aspiring for their sons to achieve similar educational heights.

“This promising statistic signifies a positive step towards gender-neutral education in rural India,” remarked Shri Dharmendra Pradhan during the report’s launch. “The resolute stance of parents from rural communities, regardless of their child’s gender, showcases the transformative power of education. It is a testament to our country’s evolving mindset and its alignment with the inclusive educational vision.”

The report’s findings resonate with the broader context of gender equality and inclusivity in education, echoing the goals set forth by the National Education Policy 2020. The report also underscored the vital role of parental involvement in shaping children’s educational journeys. Approximately 62.5% of children are supervised by their mothers, and 49% are under the guidance of their fathers. Moreover, the report highlighted that over 38% of parents opt for private tutors to supplement their children’s education.

The survey delved into technology’s influence on rural children’s lives, revealing that nearly 73% of children use smartphones for under two hours daily. Older children, specifically those in class 8 and above, tend to spend more time on their phones, with 25.4% dedicating two to four hours. This insight speaks to the evolving role of technology in education and leisure activities within rural communities.

The report’s launch took place within the India Rural Colloquy 2023, an extraordinary event aimed at generating actionable solutions to rural India’s challenges. Thought leaders, policymakers, and representatives of local communities participated in a series of meaningful discussions on development, culture, business, and more. The event’s focus on grassroots perspectives emphasized the need for inclusive progress.

“The aspirations expressed by parents in this survey serve as a beacon for policymakers and educators alike,” commented Javed Siddiqui, Lead, Education at Transform Rural India. “This collective resolve demands sustained efforts to establish an all-encompassing education system that nurtures the growth of every child in rural India.”

As India journeys towards its Independence Day, the unveiling of this report symbolizes a significant step towards nurturing inclusive education and holistic development in rural communities. To bring to the surface a new set of actionable strategies for the development of the country’s rural sector ahead of India’s Independence Day, the grassroots NGO TRI curated the conference’s third edition of India Rural Colloquy 2023 | Rural Renaissance from August 1 to 8, in Delhi.
