Kolkata Society for Asian Studies and Sarojini Naidu College for Women Organize ‘Wonderland Fairytale’ Online Workshop

NEWS WAVE INDIA: The virtual halls of Kolkata Society for Asian Studies (KSAS) came alive with the magic of fairy tales as they hosted an online workshop titled “Wonderland Fairytale” in collaboration with the Department of Bengali at Sarojini Naidu College for Women. The workshop, which commenced with an inaugural programme, aims to explore the origin, storytelling intricacies, and contemporary applications of fairy tales.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Debtusi Misra Chowdhury, Assistant Professor in the Bengali Department at Sarojini Naidu College for Women and Assistant Secretary of KSAS, who also served as the convener of the workshop.

Professor Dr. Ranjana Ray, Former Head & Professor Emeritus of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Calcutta and Vice President of KSAS, delivered the inaugural address, setting the stage for the theme’s orientation.

The keynote address was given by Professor Dr. Achintya Kumar Biswas, Former Professor at the Department of Bengali, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, who beautifully pointed out the essence of the study area in his lecture.

The focal point of the deliberation was ‘Roopkatha’ – a socio-cultural analysis, with a special reference to Bengali Fairy Tales. Dr. Shraboni Bandopadhyay, Head of the Department of Bengali at Sarojini Naidu College for Women, graced the event as the special guest.

During the technical session, Professor Bikas Kanti Midya provided a detailed conception of fairy tales, engaging numerous participants who joined the interactive session.

Prof Sarit Kumar Choudhuri, Vice President of KSAS, expressed his enthusiasm for the event and highlighted the importance of preserving and appreciating the cultural significance of fairy tales.

The Online Workshop on Wonderland Fairytale is scheduled to continue from 4th to 9th August 2023, promising a journey into the enchanting world of fairy tales, uncovering their multifaceted storytelling, underlying depths, and exploring their relevance in various genres of literature and modern media.

The workshop’s success is attributed to the efforts of Dr. Sarmistha De Basu, Secretary of KSAS, who extended the vote of thanks to all participants, guests, and organizers.

This captivating event promises to illuminate the enduring charm of fairy tales and their relevance in contemporary society, bridging the gap between fantasy and reality, and inspiring the participants to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of ‘Roopkatha’ – the magical world of Bengali Fairy Tales.
