Share it

NEWS WAVE INDIA: International Mother Language Day is a day observed annually on February 21st to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999 and has been celebrated every year since 2000.

The day is meant to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and promoting mother languages, which are the languages that a person has learned from birth or early childhood. It is estimated that there are about 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, and many of them are endangered or at risk of disappearing.

The theme for International Mother Language Day changes every year and is chosen by UNESCO. The theme for 2021 was “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society,” which emphasized the importance of multilingualism in promoting social inclusion, and the theme for 2022 was “Indigenous languages matter for development, peacebuilding and reconciliation.”

On this day, various cultural events, conferences, and workshops are held around the world to celebrate linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother languages. It is a day for people to recognize the importance of their own mother languages and to appreciate the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world.
