NEWS WAVE INDIA: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Thursday has extended the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for the financial year 2020-21 till December 31, 2021. Naturally, in a pandemic situation, it is a great relief for thousands of taxpayers.
Generally, the due date of IT Return filing for the salaried person/pensioner is July 31 of the Assessment Year. In view of the Covid virus, earlier the deadline was extended in May. Then CBDT extended the deadline to the end of September. The IT department already had introduced a new tax e-filing portal to make the ITR filing more smooth and hassle-free.
In a statement on Thursday, the CBDT said, “on consideration of difficulties reported by the taxpayers and other stakeholders in the filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports of audit for the Assessment Year 2021-22 under the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the “Act”), Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to further extend the due dates for filing of Income Tax Returns and various reports audit for the Assessment Year 2021-22.”
