NEWS WAVE INDIA: The Global Uro Oncology Congress, held at The Westin Hotel from November 23rd to 25th, took center stage in addressing the burgeoning global cancer crisis. The event, organized by the Urological Society of India- Uro Onco Section and chaired by the esteemed Dr. Amit Ghose, aimed to disseminate up-to-date knowledge on kidney, prostate, and bladder cancers while emphasizing the critical role of societal service in cancer prevention.

Honoring Urological Pioneers:
The congress acknowledged the transformative impact of the Robotic Revolution in cancer surgery, with a special tribute to Dr. Mani Menon, an Indian-born luminary. Dr. Menon received “The Tagore Medal” for his lifetime achievement, marking his pivotal role in making once-impossible cancer surgeries a reality. Professor Prokar Dasgupta, an alumnus of Calcutta Medical College, was celebrated for his excellence in Robotic Surgery, receiving “The Pride of Bengal Award” in recognition of his global contributions.

Excellence Recognized:
The event also recognized living legends in Urology from across the country, conferring upon them the “Awards of Excellence” for their outstanding contributions to the field, particularly in Uro Oncology in India.

A Call to Action:
Speaking to the media, Dr. Amit Ghose highlighted the dual focus of the congress: advancing scientific knowledge and promoting societal well-being. He emphasized the need for increased awareness of cancer risk factors, urging proactive measures against smoking, obesity, sedentary habits, and familial predispositions. The initiative aims to educate the public on early diagnosis measures, such as regular health checkups and PSA tests after the age of 50, with the ultimate goal of managing and curing cancers at an early stage.

Global Cancer Landscape:
The conference shed light on the escalating burden of cancer worldwide, with 20 lakh cancer patients and 9 lakh deaths annually. Urological cancers, including prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers, account for a significant 10% of this incidence. Despite the alarming statistics, the congress underscored a silver lining—the survival rate surpasses the mortality rate, offering hope for improved outcomes through awareness and early intervention.

Organizers and Partners:
Organized in collaboration with the Urological Society of India- Uro Onco Section, the congress was spearheaded by Dr. Amit Ghose, a stalwart in Uro Oncology based out of Apollo Hospitals. With over 35 years of experience and over 10,000 successfully treated patients, Dr. Ghose’s leadership in organizing the Global Uro Oncology workshop has proven beneficial for aspiring surgeons in the field.

In a world grappling with the rising spectre of cancer, the Global Uro Oncology Congress stands as a beacon of hope, uniting experts, celebrating achievements, and fostering a collective commitment to combat cancer with courage.
