Floating Dead Fishes In Rabindra Sarovar Lake Triggers Fear Among Environmentalists

NEWS WAVE INDIA, Kolkata: Similar to last year, a huge number of dead fish were seen floating in the Rabindra Sarovar Lake since Sunday. This has already triggered fear among the environmentalists. They assume that the water is contaminated and the sole cause of the death of the fishes.

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is the custodian of this south Kolkata lake. KMDA confirmed this report and had sent a team to the spot for inspection.

Speaking to a national media, environmentalist SM Ghosh said that, “dead fish is everywhere in the lake. Found yesterday and today. Lake water is toxic now.” He pointed out that the level of dissolved oxygen in the water appeared to be extremely poor. This has caused the deaths of 25 to 30 fishes.

On the other hand, speaking to news agency PTI, KMDA Chief Executive Officer Antara Acharya said, “we have sent a team of experts after coming to know about the development.”

Acharya also said that there have been instances of dead fish floating in the lake water for past few days. She also said that the KMDA will take remedial steps to increase oxygen level in the water, including putting in more algae and other watery plants.
Acharya concluded by saying, “floating dead fish can be spotted in a waterbody for various factors. We have to find out what happened in Rabindra Sarovar.”
