PARTHA ROY, Kolkata: Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) organised a special seminar on “Silver Economy and Healthy Ageing” in Kolkata on 10th April 2026 highlighting the growing economic and social opportunities arising from India’s rapidly ageing population.
The Silver Economy is fast emerging as a significant growth sector across India, including West Bengal, driven by increasing life expectancy, the breakdown of joint family systems, and the migration of younger generations for education and employment. With seniors living longer, the demand for proper financial planning, quality healthcare, and lifestyle support services has become critical for ensuring healthy and productive ageing.
In urban centres like Kolkata, the shift away from traditional joint families has encouraged “active ageing”, with many seniors preferring independent, amenity-rich living arrangements. In rural Bengal, large-scale youth migration has resulted in rising loneliness among the elderly, creating strong demand for professional home healthcare and caregiving services. This trend is opening new employment opportunities for young people in nursing, geriatric care, and companionship roles.
The seminar emphasised the transition from conventional old-age homes to modern integrated senior living solutions. These include luxury retirement communities equipped with healthcare facilities and smart safety features, age-specific assisted living options (for 60-70, 70-80, and 80+ age groups), and technology-driven care such as telemedicine and wearable health monitors.
Experts at the event stressed the need for an integrated caregiving ecosystem. They called for training family members in elderly care, building greater societal dignity and respect for caregiving professions, and developing new economic models along with regulatory frameworks for senior asset management, legacy planning, and intergenerational bonding.
The discussions concluded that by effectively addressing these emerging needs, Eastern India — particularly West Bengal — can transform the Silver Economy into a powerful engine of economic growth, youth employment, and dignified living for senior citizens.
