PARTHA ROY, KOLKATA: Bharat marked Parakram Diwas on 23rd January 2026, honoring the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the iconic freedom fighter whose indomitable spirit continues to inspire generations. The observance, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, celebrates Netaji’s unparalleled courage, sacrifice, and contributions to the nation’s independence struggle.

The Ministry of Culture spearheaded the official events from January 23 to 25, focusing on themes of patriotism and national unity. Key highlights included exhibitions showcasing rare archives and photographs, drawing crowds across multiple locations. A month-long exhibition titled “Life and Legacy of Netaji” was inaugurated by the Anthropological Survey of India at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, symbolizing the resilience of India’s freedom fighters who endured hardships there. Additionally, the National Archives of India (NAI) hosted “Subhash Abhinandan” at ITF Ground in Sri Vijyapuram, featuring seldom-seen records and images from Netaji’s life, running from January 23 to 25. These initiatives emphasized their role in educating the youth about Netaji’s ideals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a poignant message, underscoring Netaji’s bravery and sacrifice. He honored Netaji’s pivotal role in the freedom struggle, inspiring patriotism among millions of Indians transcending differences of religion, caste, and language. PM Modi reminded citizens of the tremendous contributions made by countless Indians to overthrow British colonial rule and called upon every Indian, especially the youth, to embody strength, fearlessness, and proactive steps toward promoting India’s security and unity. The PM also noted the Andaman Islands’ significance as a site of enduring freedom spirit.

In Kolkata, the celebrations were held in grand style at the iconic Victoria Memorial Hall. The event saw the presence of Vice President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan and West Bengal Governor Dr. C. V. Ananda Bose. Three organizations under the Ministry of Culture—the National Council of Science Museums, Indian Museum, and Victoria Memorial Hall—collaborated to organize a program that inspired patriotism and remembered the collective contributions of Indians to the independence movement.

Vice President Radhakrishnan also visited Cuttack, Netaji’s birthplace in Odisha, where he paid homage to the leader. His participation included tributes at the site, alongside exhibitions and cultural presentations highlighting Netaji’s vision for a strong, united, and self-reliant India.

Parakram Diwas was observed in 13 places across India, each tied to Netaji’s life and legacy, including educational institutions and historical sites. From musical tributes in Sri Vijaya Puram to school assemblies in Manipur and gatherings , the day fostered a nationwide sense of valor and national pride.

As the nation reaffirms its commitment to building a strong India, Parakram Diwas serves as a reminder of Netaji’s rallying cry: freedom is not given, it is taken.
