Partha Roy, Kolkata: Shri Kishan Kumar Kejriwal,  noted Industrialist ,   is elected as President in 191st Annual General Meeting Calcutta Chamber of Commerce on October 28th, 2022 in Kolkata.

Dr. Sashi Panja Hon’ble Minister of Industry, Commerce & Enterprises and Public Enterprises & Industrial Reconstruction, Government of West Bengal, who was Chief Guest, inagurated the 191st Annual General Meeting of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Shailja Mehta, President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce in her Welcome address listed various activities initiated by the Chamber over last year as well as various industry friendly measures initiated by Government of West Bengal in consultation with the Chamber to bring investment in West Bengal.

Founded in 1830, Calcutta Chamber of Commerce is oldest Commerce and Industry Association not only in India but in entire Asia. The records indicate that the idea of business assembly was first mooted at a meeting on 5th July 1830 attended by about 200 businessmen of Calcutta and Calcutta Trade Association was born. The Association adopted the name “Calcutta Chamber of Commerce” in 1977.

The impact of this Chamber has been immense in shaping the way Kolkata developed, including the broaching of the idea of construction of the famous Howrah Bridge and the first railway track connecting Calcutta to Burdwan. Various initiatives of the Chamber played major role in development of industries across the state of West Bengal as well as in Eastern Region of India. It has often given constructive lead in the humanitarian sphere.

Minister Dr. Sashi Panja hightlighted various initiatives of Government of West Bengal to boost investment in the state specially in infrastructure development, MSME sector,  Information Technology, IT- enable services, food processing, horticulture, agro industries, tourism, minining, biofuels including ethanol production industry, textile, tea and jute industry.

Minister Dr. Panja emphazied that as West Bengal has agriculture lead economy and  Government will welcome investment in agro based industries. Government of West Bengal  has developed industry- specific and multi product  growth centres and industrial parks with plug and play infrastructure available for investments.

The state offers natural resources and minerals, huge well trained manpower and human resource. Shilpa Sathi scheme is helping the industries experience ease in their investment journey in the state.

Shri R. K. Chhajer, Past President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce and Chairman -MSME, FICCI Eastern Region moderated the session.
