NEWS WAVE INDIA: In a remarkable tribute to his illustrious career, acclaimed journalist Utpal Chatterjee was conferred with the prestigious “Legend of Bengal” Award by the All India Human Rights Council at the National Library Auditorium on World Human Rights Day. This accolade follows his earlier recognition as an “Outstanding Indian” by the National Integration Forum of India (NIFI) at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
Known for his keen observations and insightful commentary, Utpal Chatterjee, now the Global Ambassador for Peace and a Global Peace Icon, has built a distinguished career in journalism and public speaking. Starting as the National Deputy Editor at THE TIMES OF INDIA, he later became the India Editor of a prominent New York-based journal and joined the BBC, London, as an expert panelist in 1997.
Having interviewed 21 Heads of State, including U.S. Presidents and British Prime Ministers, and traveled with three Indian Prime Ministers, Chatterjee’s influence extends far beyond borders. His fellowship in Journalism from Oxford under the mentorship of Sir Neville Maxwell has enriched his perspective during over 55 official assignments across continents.
Expressing humility upon receiving the “Legend of Bengal” Award, Chatterjee stated, “It was truly a humbling experience… All that I have done is to remain true to my conscience, work hard to remain true to it, and try to be good to everyone in every conceivable way.”
In addition to his journalistic achievements, Chatterjee holds the distinction of being the most outstanding Honourable Sheriff of Calcutta since Independence, having been appointed as the only journalist to hold this position in India. As a “Distinguished Professor” with St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata, he continues to contribute to education and was recently honored with the National Education Leadership Award.
Chatterjee’s commitment to public service is further underscored by his role as the Chief Rotary Ambassador for the seventh consecutive year and his past role as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Department of Income Tax, Government of India.
The All India Human Rights Council recognizes him not only as an outstanding journalist but also as the “Legend of Bengal,” acknowledging his exceptional contributions to enriching national values, public service, and international journalism. As Chatterjee continues to inspire through his speeches and writings, his legacy as a sharp and outspoken observer remains firmly intact.
