Partha Roy, Kolkata: The 150th birth anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a renowned composer, painter, and poet, was celebrated with a piano recital on November 8, 2025, at The Calcutta School of Music in Kolkata. The event was organized by the Embassy of Lithuania in India, in collaboration with The Calcutta School of Music.
Čiurlionis is considered the father of Lithuanian music and art. His works are known for blending mysticism and cosmic themes, influencing global modernism. Lithuania has declared 2025 as the “Year of Čiurlionis” to honor his legacy. Ambassador Diana Mickevičienė hosted the piano recital, featuring the talented Piano Duo Zubovas, consisting of Sonata Deveikytė-Zubovienė and Rokas Zubovas.
The program explored five themes that are present in Čiurlionis’ music, art, and poetry. The performance combined words, sounds, and images, giving the audience a glimpse into Čiurlionis’ creative world. He is known for his pursuit of artistic unity, creating soundscapes that evoke emotions and transcend mediums.
Čiurlionis had a short but prolific career, producing over 300 musical works and around 400 paintings and sketches. He also wrote prose, verse, and essays on music and art. This recital is part of the “Year of People-to-People Relations” between Lithuania and India, celebrating the recorded 400th anniversary of the first Lithuanian’s arrival in India (2025) and the 130th anniversary of the first Indian’s visit to Lithuania( 2026).
