Renewable Sources for Energy production are key to long term Sustainable Development in India

Partha Roy, Kolkata: India’s most of electricity generations are traditionally based on Non Renewable Energy sources specially fossil fuels like coal, petroleum products and natural gas. However, due to climate change issues involving global warming, steady & fast depleting fossil fuels, there is urgent need to use renewable sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy & other alternative renewable sources of fuels to produce electricity.

Massive global efforts are on to produce electricity at low cost using various natural renewable sources of fuel like solar power, wind power and others including waste. Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi has initiated several national and international initiatives to push for development of Renewable Sources of Energy across India.

In effort to facililate deliberation on wide spectrum of issues in energy sector, especially electricity production, distribution, consumption, which are key drivers of growth and development, ASSOCHAM organised 5th edition of Energy Meet focusing on “Futuristic Solutions: Power Generation to Distribution – Renewable and Sustainable Energy” on 13th February, 2024 in Kolkata.

While addressing the Energy Meet, Shri Babul Supriyo Minister in Charge, Department of Non Conventional and Renewable Energy Sources & Department of Information Technology and Electronics, Government of West Bengal mentioned pathways of transition to Renewable Energy sources completely are very challenging because of multiple complex socio-economic issues. Minister Babul Supriyo highlighted need for optimal balancing use of Renewable Sources of Energy like solar power, wind power & others and Non – Renewable Sources of Energy like fossil fuels atleast for a period of time to produce electricity for mass consumption at low cost.

Minister Babul Supriyo indicated under leadership of Chief Minister of West Bengal Smt. Mamata Banerjee, Government of West Bengal will initiate steps for further growth and development of Renewable Sources of Energy in the State. Mr. Andrew Fleming British Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata spoke on British government initiatives to promote Renewable Sources of Energy in United Kingdom.

Smt. Perminder Kaur – Senior Director, Head East & North East, India and National Project Lead – ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) during her address lauded efforts of Central Government as well as State Government to push for multi-dimensional comprehensive development of Renewable Energy sources by launching sector specific policies, supporting Research and Development across the sector, financial & other ilncentives both to industry as well as to consumers.

Shri Somesh Dasgupta, Chairman ASSOCHAM Energy Council East during his address indicated innovation in Technology and development of new Technology to produce electricity at low cost from Renewable Sources of Energy as well as alternative new sources of energy will facililate transition to green economy.
