NEWS WAVE INDIA: In Uttarkashi on November 28, the initial among the 41 workers who were ensnared in the Silkyara tunnel of Uttarakand was successfully extracted on Tuesday evening, concluding a harrowing ordeal that persisted for nearly 17 days.
At approximately 8 pm, an ambulance, carrying the rescued worker, departed from the tunnel’s entrance and proceeded towards a community health center. An official reported that the rescue team had managed to break through the final debris barrier around 7 pm.
After an intensive 17-day rescue operation involving multiple agencies, the first of the 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel has been successfully evacuated. The following is a chronological account of the disaster and the ensuing rescue efforts:
November 12: Workers are trapped as portions of the Silkyara-Dandalgaon under-construction tunnel on the Brahmkhal-Yamunotri highway collapse due to a landslide at around 5:30 am on Diwali.
November 13: Contact is established with the trapped workers through an oxygen supply pipe, and they are reported to be safe. Efforts to provide essentials to the trapped laborers commence.
November 14: Steel pipes of 800- and 900-millimeter diameter are brought to the tunnel site for horizontal digging through the rubble. Two laborers sustain minor injuries due to falling debris.
November 15: Dissatisfied with the first drilling machine, a state-of-the-art auger machine is airlifted from Delhi to expedite the operation.
November 16: The new drilling machine is assembled and installed, starting operation past midnight.
November 17: The machine drills about 24 meters through the 57-meter rubble stretch, and the process is halted when the fifth pipe hits an obstacle. Another high-performance auger machine is brought in.
November 18: Drilling is suspended to avoid potential risks to rescue personnel from vibrations. Alternative evacuation plans, including vertical drilling, are explored.
November 19: Drilling remains suspended as experts consider horizontal drilling with the auger machine the best option.
November 20: PM Narendra Modi reviews the operation. Horizontal drilling from the Silkyara end resumes overnight.
November 21: The first video of trapped laborers is released. Two blasts initiate the drilling of an alternative tunnel, but it could take up to 40 days. Horizontal drilling from the Silkyara end resumes.
November 22: Horizontal drilling reaches about 45 meters, with 12 meters remaining. Ambulances are put on standby, but the drilling faces a hurdle with iron rods.
November 23: The iron obstruction is removed, and drilling resumes but is halted again due to cracks in the platform.
November 24: The machine is restarted, but drilling is halted when the drill hits a metal girder.
November 25: Blades of the auger machine get stuck, prompting consideration of alternatives such as manual drilling or drilling from above.
November 26: Vertical drilling creates an alternative escape route. Simultaneously, horizontal drilling through the rubble and vertical drilling from above progress.
November 27: Rat-hole mining experts assist in horizontal digging. Vertical drilling from above reaches a depth of 36 meters.
November 28: Rescue workers break through the final rubble stretch at about 7 pm. NDRF and SDRF personnel enter the steel chute to reach the trapped workers and begin evacuating them on wheeled stretchers, with the first laborer successfully evacuated.
