Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Seizes 14.3 Kg Smuggled Gold on the Indo-Bangladesh Border

Partha Roy, Kolkata: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, with the assistance of the Border Security Force, conducted an operation against gold smugglers at the Indo-Bangladesh border near Gede in Nadia District of West Bengal on 2nd September 2023.

Search of the area resulted in recovery of 106 biscuits and cut pieces of foreign origin gold totally weighing 14.3 kgs. The smuggled gold were concealed by burying the packets containing the smuggled gold in a pit in a forested area adjoining the international border.

Two persons have been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. This seizure is a major success for DRI in combating gold smuggling and in unearthing novel modus operandi adopted by gold smugglers. Further investigation is in progress.

The total weight of the seized gold biscuits is 14.296 kg and has an estimated value of Rs 8.50 crore in the Indian market. Border Security Force South Bengal Frontier is strengthening measures to stop smuggling in India – Bangladesh boder areas.

Public Relations Officer, BSF, South Bengal expressed happiness over this achievement of Frontier jawans. He said BSF has tightened its trap against every heinous act of smugglers. The officer said that the joint effort of the BSF and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Kolkata, made the operation successful. He appealed to the people living on the border that if they get any information related to gold smuggling, they can contact BSF’s Seema Saathi helpline number 14419. Apart from this,BSF South Bengal has issued another number 9903472227 at the border to send WhatsApp messages or voice messages related to gold smuggling. Appropriate reward money will be paid to the person providing the correct information and his identity will be kept confidential.
