PARTHA ROY, Kolkata: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is organizing a field workshop on Conservation and Restoration of Monuments for in-service Conservation and Horticulture Staff of the Eastern Region from November 10-14, 2025, in Kolkata. The workshop is the brainchild of Shri Janhwij Sharma, ADG (Conservation & World Heritage), and was developed with Shri Bhima Azmira, Director (Conservation), to upgrade the knowledge and skills of conservators, archaeologists, and engineers in the ASI Eastern Region (ASI-ER). Eight Circles of ASI-ER are participating.

Shri Janhwij Sharma mentioned that the conservation of each monument is distinct and requires a multi-disciplinary approach, given the wide range of new technologies evolving in the 21st century. Prof. Dr. Alok Tripathi stressed the importance of preserving the “authenticity” of monuments over beautification. Dr. Dilip Kumar Khamari, Regional Director-ER, highlighted the crucial role of visitors and local communities in the conservation of monuments.
