NEWS WAVE INDIA: Bengal Home Industries Association (BHIA), India’s oldest Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), proudly commemorated “World Environment Day” at its premises located at 172/3, Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata. In collaboration with All India Women’s Conference (AIWC), Nari Seva Sangha, F-Cube Industries Pvt. Ltd., and other organizations, BHIA organized a series of activities to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
To inaugurate the World Environment Day Celebration, members of the BHIA Management Committee lit lamps, symbolizing the enlightenment of society towards preserving the environment. Shri G.M. Kapur, Vice President of BHIA, introduced today’s program, highlighting the significance of the event.
One of the key initiatives undertaken by BHIA was a workshop organized in collaboration with F-Cube, specifically targeting women from different sections of society. The workshop aimed to educate and empower participants in processing various natural fibers, such as water hyacinth, sal, bamboo, sabai grass, banana plant, and others. Through this workshop, BHIA and F-Cube aimed to showcase the diverse applications of these natural fibers, enabling the production of utility products like food packaging, baskets, handbags, and office utility items. Soma Ghosh, representing F-Cube, conducted the workshop, sharing valuable insights into the usage of natural fibers for sustainable product development.
Smt. Mohua Bose, Honorary General Secretary of BHIA, shed light on the organization’s pivotal role in empowering marginalized and underprivileged women in society. She emphasized BHIA’s commitment to providing opportunities and skill development programs, enabling these women to lead sustainable livelihoods.
Additionally, BHIA organized a workshop on Patachitra, an ancient folk art form, where Patachitra artists delivered lectures and demonstrations, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance of this art form.
Furthermore, Smt. Nandini Mahtab, a trustee of BHIA, highlighted the medicinal uses of Banana leaf, including its efficacy in treating various infections, such as bedsores. Her insightful session shed light on the immense potential of natural resources in the field of healthcare.
The workshop and activities organized by BHIA align with their “Green Skill Initiative,” promoting sustainable practices and environmental conservation. BHIA encourages members of civil society to visit their retail outlet and explore a wide range of eco-friendly utility products, providing sustainable alternatives to plastic items. The organization emphasizes the spirit of this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat the plastic,” by advocating for the adoption of eco-friendly products wherever feasible.
As BHIA continues its unwavering commitment towards environmental preservation, the World Environment Day celebration served as a platform to inspire individuals and organizations to embrace sustainable practices and work collectively towards a greener future.
