Urvi Teresa Gomes, Kolkata: On the 23rd of July, 2023, Bharat Sevashram Sangha’s Pranavananda Institute of Management & Technology (PIMT, Ballygunge campus) organised a “Healthy Living and Wellness Therapy” workshop wherein the Keynote Speaker was Dr. Amit Guha (MS Ortho Senior Physician surgeon, Fortis and Nightingale Hospital), accompanied by Co-Ordinator Shri Sankar Sengupta.
Through their academic and technical institutions in the nation and abroad, Bharat Sevashram Sangha, an Indian international philanthropic organisation with a global network, currently runs a large number of youth upliftment programmes and vocational training on multiple fronts. The workshop on Orthopedic Physiotherapy was hosted essentially for such youths who will later go on to help our society, and in turn make the world resilient and a better place to live in.
Physiotherapy, also known as “physical therapy”, is a specialized field of healthcare that plays a vital role in promoting overall wellbeing. Through a combination of evidence-based techniques, exercise, and patient education, Physiotherapy aims to restore, maintain, and improve physical function and mobility. It is now an integral part of orthopedic practices, however, “Physiotherapy is not only related to Orthopedics but also stretches out to other areas,” said Dr. Guha. Physiotherapy is much more than a conventional treatment for physical ailments; it is a pathway to holistic wellbeing. By empowering individuals to take an active role in their recovery and overall health, physical therapy enables them to achieve optimal physical and mental prosperity.
“The ultimate goal of orthopedic treatment as well as orthopedic physiotherapy,” according to Dr. Guha, “is to restore the maximum possible physical independence to a patient in performing the physical tasks involved in the activities of daily routine (ADR) and occupation.” The workshop included various topics such as the steps involved in orthopedic and physiotherapeutic evaluation, specific physiotherapy examination to plan therapeutic programmes, and concluded with a few case studies.
By addressing a wide range of orthopedic conditions and injuries, physiotherapists contribute significantly to pain management, injury rehabilitation, mobility improvement, and prevention of future musculoskeletal issues. As awareness of the importance of preventative care, musculoskeletal and holistic health continues to grow, orthopedic physiotherapy’s role in promoting wellbeing will become increasingly recognized and integrated into healthcare systems worldwide. The workshop will facilitate the improvement of the quality of health of any individual in everyday life.
